Bunions Can Scare Women Away

Splints and braces treat foot problems that show in sandals.

The spring and summer months can be an anxious time for women who have bunions. These unsightly sores may lead some self-conscious females to bypass the comfort of sandals and flip-flops.

For example, NBC news affiliate WBAL11 recently reported that Maryland resident Ileana Luciana is paying the price for frequently sporting high heels. Due to the decreased range of toe motion that these shoes allow for, she has developed calluses that make wearing summer footwear uncomfortable and unattractive.

Aside from popular treatments such as the use of a bunion splint, there are other remedies recommended by doctors. Podiatrist Dr. Kelly Geoghan told the news source that bunions can be reduced by applying a moisturizing agent to the affected area, then covering it in Saran wrap and wearing socks during sleep to keep the moisture contained.

Some women also opt to purchase a bunion brace or similar products that are designed to treat hallux valgus.

Although high heels are a favorite fashion piece among many women, Geoghan recommends that individuals find a happy balance of time spent adorning this variety of footwear. She told the media outlet that she wants her patients to wear the shoes they love “web site.”

According to the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, tight shoes can cause bunions as well as other foot problems such as corns, calluses and hammer toe.
